Want your business to show up on Google Maps and local search results? It starts with a Google Business Profile.

For small businesses and local service providers, getting listed in Google’s Business Directory is one of the fastest and most effective ways to attract new customers. And the good news? It’s completely free.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the exact steps to claim, verify, and optimize your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) so your business can appear in local searches, on mobile devices, and in Google Maps.

Step 1: Sign In or Create a Google Account

Before you start, you’ll need a Google account. If you already have one for your business (like Gmail or Google Workspace), you're all set.

➡️ Go to https://business.google.com and click “Manage Now.”
Sign in using your business email address.

Step 2: Enter Your Business Name

Type the exact name of your business as you want it to appear in search results. If it’s already listed, you may see an option to claim it.

📌 Tip: Use your real-world business name—don’t add extra keywords or locations unless they’re officially part of the name.

Step 3: Choose the Business Category

Start typing what your business does, and Google will offer suggestions. Pick the closest match (you can add more categories later).

🛠 Example: If you're a handyman, try “Handyman,” “Home Repair Service,” or “Contractor.”

Step 4: Add Your Location

  • If you have a storefront or office customers can visit, select “Yes” and enter your full address.
  • If you’re service-based (like a mobile dog groomer or web designer), select “No” and choose your service areas instead.

Step 5: Enter Contact Information

Add your:

📞 Phone number
🌐 Website URL (if you don’t have one,
Siren Web Designs can help!)

Make sure this info is accurate and matches what’s on your website and social media.

Step 6: Verify Your Business

Google will ask you to verify ownership. This step ensures only legitimate business owners can manage the listing.

Most common verification methods:
  • Postcard sent to your business address (arrives in 5–7 days)
  • Phone or email (available for some businesses)
  • Video verification (you’ll record a short walkthrough of your location, signage, tools, or vehicle)

✅ Follow the instructions, and don’t skip this step—your listing won’t go live until verified.

Step 7: Complete Your Profile

Once verified, fill out your profile completely to boost visibility:

📍 Add business hours
📸 Upload high-quality photos (logo, storefront, products, team)
✍️ Write a compelling business description (1–2 short paragraphs)
💬 Turn on messaging so customers can contact you directly
🎯 Add services, products, or FAQs depending on your business type

Step 8: Ask for Reviews

Google reviews help build trust and improve your local ranking.

➡️ Send happy customers a direct link to leave a review
➡️ Respond to all reviews—positive or negative—to show you're active and engaged

Bonus: Keep Your Listing Updated

Update your profile regularly with:

  • Holiday or seasonal hours
  • Photos and posts
  • New services or product offerings
  • Special offers or events

This signals to Google that your business is active and relevant, improving your chances of appearing in local results.
